Several years ago, my husband blessed a dear friend of mine with a lavish gift…he wanted her to accompany me on a trip home to Hawaii so he gave her a plane ticket to Hawaii and free hotel accommodations to accompany me!
What none of us knew was that my friend had a really hard time receiving lavish gifts. She fought tears and guilt all week as we lay on the beach, thinking about how she didn’t deserve to have it so good.
Well, she finally got to the place where she realized she needed to accept the gift with gratitude because she had no control over receiving it.
She might as well enjoy it!
But from that moment on, she and I began noticing a pattern about God; namely that he loves to give gifts. And not just one, but many gifts! Over the years we saw that often He gave gifts that we never even thought to ask for, but they were EXACTLY what we needed! Sometimes they were things that we didn’t even need, they were wants or unspoken desires!! But then we noticed something else too… He rarely gave us just the amount we would’ve been happy with or asked for. Instead, He gave so much that we had more than we needed! His gifts are usually abundant and over the top.
That is the heart of God!
The definition of the word abundance is: present in great quantity; more than adequate; oversufficient; more than one needs.
Let’s look at the story of Jesus feeding the 5 thousand. The disciples fretted and scratched their heads about how they were going to feed so many people on just 5 loaves of bread and 2 tiny fish. It was an impossible task! But not only did God deliver and everyone was fed, there were 12 baskets of leftovers!!! This mean that all 5,000 people did not eat just enough to tide themselves over. The truth is that they must’ve eaten until they were all full, all 5,000 of them!! God was proving something about Himself that day.
He desires to bless to overflowing, as David mentioned in Psalm 23:5…..”my cup overflows”!
So how does this relate to your life right now?
Have you ever considered that maybe God desires to fill the voids in your heart from unmet needs? (Those areas that leave you feeling empty and the ones you are always trying to fill with something to make yourself feel better).
The fact is that we all lacked something….perhaps love, nurture, self-esteem, power, protection, or intimacy. We might have become adults who believe that those needs will never truly be met.
However God tells us a different truth.
2 Corinthians 9:8 – And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
He tells us that He desires to fill those empty places, and not only to fill them to capacity, but to fill them to overflowing! And He wants to give us those desires in tangible ways so we can embrace Him as a Good Father.
If you lacked love, He yearns to overflow you with love from Him and other people! If you lacked self-esteem, He wants to give you 200 reasons to feel valued and important!
It’s impossible not to fall in love with a God who lavishes us where we need it most, who gives us what we don’t even think to ask for, or who gives us our deepest desires, or often what we don’t deserve!
Psalm 145:7 – They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.
