Fix Your Eyes On The One Who Can-Devotional

by Alia Fisher

One goes, another comes.  Constantly, it seems!  But unlike the gentle waves of the sea, our problems are like unwelcome intruders that sometimes beat us mercilessly.  Often they aren’t even polite enough to wait for the other to leave.  But Jesus never promised us a pain-free life.  Instead He told us, “In this life you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, NIV).  We might easily be disillusioned if we think that we are supposed to coast as Christians!  But what Jesus has promised us in these trials, is that He will walk through each trial with us, giving us the strength, wisdom, and power to endure them!

The truth is that each trial comes with great opportunity if we look at it properly.  Have you ever considered that trials are actually blessings in disguise?  Without trials to show us how powerless we really are, we wouldn’t ever need a Savior. Trials keep us dependent upon God and encourage us to trust in His ability to properly take care of us.  Then when He comes through for us, we grow in our faith!

If we think about it, trials by their very nature are almost always more than we can handle in our humanity.  Likely that’s how God designed it!  He wants us to turn to Him and open up our hands of control.  How many of us actually do that?  Most of us still waste senseless hours worrying, or staying up all hours of the night going over the issue in our minds.  That is EXACTLY what the enemy of God wants us to do!  He tricks us and plays upon our fears and He constantly entices us to take our eyes off the One who CAN help us!

So when faced with a serious issue in life, we may be tempted to get down and spend all our time ruminating.  There is no joy and no hope in that and we will stay seriously fearful, discouraged, and miserable.  But when we choose to focus on how God is the ONE who actually CAN solve our worries and that He is always working on our behalf even when we can’t see it, we rise above our circumstances.  That is what it means to keep our eyes above the waves! When we allow His hand to reign in our affairs, we have reason to keep an upbeat heart!  He is the antidote to despair and hopelessness.  Jesus told his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life….Can any one of you, by worrying, add a single hour to your life?” (Matt. 6:25a, 27).  So the next time you are tempted to wallow in the muck of your issue, instead ask Jesus to take care of it and then focus on His incomparably great power to do all things!

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.  That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 1:18-20, NIV).
