Willow Creek Church began in the 70s, when Bill Hybels was a student at Trinity College and his professor described the New Testament early church in such a way that he cried. Hybels discovered the transformative power of that early church when he was a youth pastor in Park Ridge, and then again when he launched Willow Creek with some friends in 1975. It took six years to get land and construction workers going, and in 1981 the first permanent Willow Creek church building was inaugurated. Anyone who wonders how the church has grown so much just needs to look at Acts 2 and the original version of how Christ’s followers got together and lived life together.

To join in on what’s happening at Willow Creek, you must become connected to live life together as the apostles did. It’s about surrendering your life to Christ, but it’s also about teaming up with friends and family members to commit your lives to the Great Commission. Willow Creek’s membership process is simple and puts you in step with others who are excited to live life with you.

Here are some steps to getting connected at Willow Creek:

  1. Take a Getting Started class to learn more about the history and values of the church, so you won’t be surprised by anything down the road. You’ll also find out how to get involved and where you can meet new people.
  2. Join a group, a class, or a workshop. They have separate “communities” that sit together in different places in the auditorium for service. You can take Wednesday night classes or learn to control your finances with Financial Peace University. Alpha is a popular class for those who just want to learn more about Christianity but just don’t know who to ask.
  3. Volunteering is one of the most rewarding ways to get connected at a church. At Willow Creek you can hang out with kids, do local outreach, or even be a sign language interpreter. All you need to do is find your passion, combine it with your spiritual gifts, and soon you’ll find yourself immersed in a group of people who love the same things you do.
  4. Talking to people and jumping in on conversations can be hard for non-extroverts, but once you try it, you’ll be glad you did. Just put on a smile and introduce yourself to one person.
