What would you like to see on your next free day with friends? When Europeans began establishing settlements in the 1600s, the area was controlled by the Piscataway Native Americans, who were forced to relocate just before the turn of the century. Even though the Europeans had settlements here, D.C. didn’t really exist until the late 1780s. That’s about when James Madison convinced the rest of the government that the federal power needed a place to call home that wouldn’t be under the influence of any other state or city. So President Washington picked a spot on the Potomac, and then Maryland and Virginia each gave a little bit of land.
