St. Paul is one of those fantastically active cities that manages to have a little bit of something for everyone. You can play outside, inside, or somewhere in between, and rarely have a chance to be bored. This capital city mixes with Minneapolis and is home to over 3 million residents. All those people are known for giving from themselves just because they like to help out. The area is extremely creative, and though Minneapolis is probably the more famous of the Twin Cities, St. Paul is where all the institutions and government sit.
Luckily for everyone who lives in St. Paul, its first name didn’t stick around very long. The original settlement was named after Pierre “Pig’s Eye” Parrant, a French man who began a tavern at Lambert’s Landing. The name switched when a Catholic pastor built on the first location of the Cathedral of Saint Paul and declared that the city required a name change.
Like many cities in Minnesota, St. Paul has grown according to the water. The Mississippi and the Minnesota were carved by glaciers and now the area has more coastline than most vacation hotspots. Minnesota is known for some great things involved with water, such as the St. Lawrence Seaway, and the first working water skis, which were created in 1922. In Minnesota there are more golfers per capita than just about anywhere else in the United States, and for every six people, there is at least one recreational boat.
Minnesota is home to a lot of firsts, such as the first time anyone said “Holy Cow”. It was spoken by Halsey Hal, a baseball commentator, while he was doing a baseball broadcast. Northwest Airlines, which is based in the Twin Cities, was the first to ban smoking on international flights, and Hibbing is the official birthplace of Greyhound Lines, Inc. Thanks to them and a brilliant idea in 1914, people could get from Hibbing to Alice by bus.
