Hands down, one of the best things about Ohio is the people. They’re outgoing and down-to-earth, the result of the perfect combination of southern, midwestern, and northern personalities. Just don’t go thinking Daytonians are southerners–by now you certainly know that the South and Ohio are two very different places. On the other hand, people from Ohio are so friendly that it sometimes feels like an echo of southern hospitality.
Ohio has a great history of doing great things. It was the first state to create laws to protect working women, and it can also lay claim to the Wright brothers, whose creation of the airplane changed modern society forever. And who could forget Harry Stevens and his hot dog? Without Mr. Stevens, there wouldn’t be any hot dogs to eat on game day. You don’t have to cross the Mason-Dixon Line in order to get great southern food, and the rest of Ohio offers mouthwatering cuisine that is about as varied as the people who live there.
Unlike other states, Ohio is a great balance of rural farmland and large cities. You can go from one to the other without very much trouble, as long as a blizzard doesn’t get in your way. But when it snows, that means you get to go snowmobiling and ice skating. Snow sports are a given when so many of the seasons involve some kind of snowfall. It probably doesn’t phase you when your car has to switch from heat to A/C in a matter of 24 hours.
As you look for love this week, think of a few things in Dayton, or even in the rest of the state, that you haven’t been able to do since you’ve lived there. Even the things you did as a kid can be a lot of fun to re-experience as an adult. Find someone special and try out a theme park or something different, like snowshoeing. Head to an Ohio State game or explore historic landmarks from our nation’s past.
Remember that a large part of who you are is formed by the history of the places and people around you. Ohio can proudly boast about Paul Laurence Dunbar, DeHart Hubbard, and even Neil Armstrong. Who knows? You might be the next person to be added to that list, or you might be getting ready to go on a date with that person tomorrow night. So, if you're a Christian, single, and living in Dayton, you've come to the right place to find others like you.
